Last week, Minnesota state officials announced that more than 30 water-pumping systems in the state had been targeted by a coordinated cyberattack—news that surprised many.

A few days later, the FBI said that cyberattacks had been reported in seven states and that “some of these activities disrupted the operation of water utilities.”

According to U.S. media reports, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is investigating the possibility of a link between Iran and cyberattacks on Minnesota’s water systems. The agency has declined to comment on the matter.

Although U.S. President Donald Trump has not blamed Iran for these attacks, cyber security experts told the BBC that the attack was most likely directed from Tehran.
