🔻In a luxurious, abandoned apartment in Damascus, the capital of Syria, armed men wearing military uniforms were searching through expensive clothing, documents, and paperwork.

On the floor of the living room, beneath a dazzling crystal chandelier, dozens of photos of a slender man in different situations were scattered; from sitting behind his work desk to playing in the snow. There were also several copies of the same photo showing him, with a warm smile, shaking hands with Bashar al-Assad, the deposed Syrian dictator.

At first glance, the man was not very recognizable, but the golden medals and glossy certificates piled up near him bore the name “Hussam Luka.”

Hussam Luka, known as “the Spider,” was one of Bashar al-Assad’s closest key figures. He has been accused of organizing crimes and systematic torture and has been sanctioned by the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union.
