According to CBS News, Iranian-American journalist Reza Vali-Zadeh, in a voice file from inside Evin Prison, warned about dire health-and-treatment conditions and the spread of dangerous contagious diseases, and said that prisoners who make even the slightest protest about this situation are denied contact with their families.

Vali-Zadeh said that for more than a year, medical services in the prison have almost not existed, and only the most basic medications are available. He warned that diseases including pulmonary tuberculosis and tuberculosis of the gastrointestinal tract—diseases that were eradicated decades ago—have returned to the prison, and that nobody knows how many prisoners may have been exposed to or infected with tuberculosis.

He said that many of the medicines that families of prisoners buy are stolen by prison staff before they reach the prisoners, that prison doctors behave inappropriately, and that they do not have sufficient professional competence.
