🔻Abdulrahman Sidd, a left-leaning figure outside the traditional party structure, won the Democrats’ primary election for the U.S. Senate in Michigan. The result is seen as one of the most important victories for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party ahead of the midterm elections.

Mr. Sidd defeated Hily Stevens, a moderate member of Congress, by a margin of less than one percent. During the campaign, he received support from figures such as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and entered the race with slogans including universal healthcare, reform of the election campaign finance system, and an end to U.S. military aid to Israel.

The contest was among the most expensive Democratic primary elections and highlighted the split between the party’s moderate and progressive wings.

Supporters of Mr. Stevens, including political action committees, spent tens of millions of dollars to back him, but Abdulrahman Sidd was able to win by relying on the support of progressive and young voters.

He will now face off in the nationwide election in November against Mike Rogers, the Republican Party nominee;
