A Republican Tennessee representative in the U.S. House of Representatives said that if Donald Trump had not intervened against the Islamic Republic, Iran would have obtained nuclear weapons and, according to him, might have used them against Israel or another country.

Tim Burchett, a member of the House committees on Foreign Affairs and Oversight and Government Reform, said in a television interview with Fox News that the Islamic Republic had “moved closer to nuclear weapons” and, in his view, was on the verge of creating a catastrophic confrontation.

He said: “If President Trump hadn’t intervened, Iran would have had nuclear weapons. They would have used it against Israel or some other country.”

The congressman also said that Trump’s policy toward Iran, for that reason, has received support from a number of Muslim countries in the Middle East, and said that those countries were also worried about the consequences of the Islamic Republic gaining nuclear weapons.

Burchett said that security issues and foreign policy should be taken into account when evaluating the administration’s performance, and said that, in his view, Trump’s presence in the White House made the world safer.
