A decision on whether Vladimir Putin will attend the G20 summit in Miami, Florida, will be based on a range of factors, Russian G20 Sherpa and Chief of the Presidential Experts’ Directorate Denis Agafonov said.

“It will depend on a whole range of factors, including the substantive preparations for the event and the overall geopolitical context. There must be a purpose for attending. The decision will probably be made on that basis,” he told reporters at a news conference at the Russian Embassy in Washington following a meeting of G20 sherpas held in preparation for the group’s December summit.

Agafonov noted that Donald Trump “has spoken quite clearly” in favor of his Russian counterpart attending the summit.
