A bright object streaked across the sky over Tripoli, Libya, followed by a loud boom that sparked fears and speculations on social media.

Libya’s Remote Sensing and Space Sciences Center said the object was a meteor, caused by a small celestial body entering Earth’s atmosphere at very high speed and burning up due to intense friction with the air.
