Apple has begun rolling out the public beta of iOS 18.1, giving eligible iPhone users an early look at the first Apple Intelligence features. The update introduces a more capable Siri that can understand personal context, along with Writing Tools designed to help users summarize, rewrite and proofread text across supported apps.

Apple says the new AI features are processed on-device where possible, a design meant to improve privacy by keeping more user data on the iPhone itself. The rollout is limited to iPhone 15 Pro and later models, reflecting the hardware requirements for Apple’s new intelligence system.

Beyond Apple Intelligence, iOS 18.1 beta also adds additional Control Center customization options, allowing users to tailor quick-access controls more flexibly. The update further expands messaging support with RCS, a move expected to improve compatibility and features in conversations with Android users.

The beta release marks an important step in Apple’s broader AI strategy, as the company begins introducing its long-promised intelligence features ahead of a wider launch. While the tools are still in testing, the public beta gives developers and early adopters a chance to evaluate how Apple’s privacy-focused approach to AI performs in everyday use.
