OpenAI has introduced o1, a new model family built to improve performance on complex reasoning tasks in math, coding, and science. The company says the system is designed to think through problems more deliberately before answering, using reinforcement learning and chain-of-thought processing to strengthen multi-step reasoning.

According to OpenAI, the model has delivered strong results on challenging benchmarks, including 83% on AIME 2024 and 74% on GPQA Diamond. Those scores suggest meaningful progress in areas where AI systems have traditionally struggled, particularly tasks that require careful logic, extended analysis, and precise problem-solving.

The release marks a notable shift in how advanced AI models are trained and deployed. Rather than prioritizing only speed, o1 is intended to spend more time reasoning internally before producing a response, with the goal of improving reliability on difficult questions.

OpenAI said the new model family represents a step toward more capable and trustworthy AI systems. The launch, announced just 45 minutes ago, underscores the company’s push to build models that can handle increasingly sophisticated real-world tasks with greater accuracy and consistency.
