OpenAI has introduced o1, a new family of reasoning models designed to handle complex math, science and coding tasks with far greater accuracy than previous systems such as GPT-4o. The company says the model represents a major advance in artificial intelligence by focusing not just on generating answers quickly, but on working through problems step by step before responding.

According to OpenAI, o1 was trained using a novel chain-of-thought approach that encourages the model to simulate a more deliberate style of reasoning. That process appears to have paid off in benchmark testing. The model reportedly scored 83% on the AIME math benchmark and 78% on GPQA, a challenging science question set, placing it among the strongest AI systems yet evaluated on these tasks.

OpenAI says the new model family is especially well suited to difficult reasoning problems in fields where accuracy and logical consistency matter most. The company also noted that safety evaluations showed reduced deceptive behavior compared with earlier models, suggesting improvements not only in capability but also in reliability.

The launch underscores a broader shift in AI development, as leading companies move beyond fluent text generation toward models that can reason more effectively through complex, multi-step problems.
