The European Parliament has approved new climate legislation requiring member states to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 65 percent before 2035. The measure, known as Green Deal 2.0, received 412 votes in favor and 178 against following lengthy negotiations in Strasbourg.
Demonstrations took place outside the parliamentary complex as lawmakers debated the package. The proposal forms part of the bloc's broader strategy to achieve climate neutrality by mid-century.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the outcome as a major step forward in the union's environmental policy. National governments must now implement the binding targets through domestic legislation over the coming months.
