On June 4, when a reporter in the Oval Office asked Donald Trump’s office whether he had considered sending U.S. special forces to Iran to remove enriched uranium, the U.S. president gave a brief response: “I didn’t want to be Jimmy Carter. I didn’t feel like I wanted to be Jimmy Carter.”

Trump’s remark referred to the failed operation to rescue American hostages in Iran in 1980—an operation that ended with the deaths of eight U.S. servicemen and later became one of the most enduring images of the Iran crisis during Carter’s presidency.
