🔸The UN General Assembly on Friday, 13 Shahrivar, adopted a resolution calling for the wider use of maps that show the area of countries and continents in proportion to their actual size.
🔸The resolution was adopted with support from 164 countries. The United States was the only country to oppose it, and six countries also abstained.
🔸The new map is based on so-called “equal-area” visualization and is intended to replace “Mercator” visualization.
🔸The resolution is not binding and does not ban the use of the well-known “Mercator” map projection, but it encourages governments, education systems, international organizations, and technology companies to make greater use of “equal-area” maps.
