U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in response to statements by Abbas Araqchi, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic, about “an eye for an eye,” said: “Donald Trump’s policy is an eye for an eye.”
Rubio, on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Manila, added that the Islamic Republic pays a “very heavy price” for the actions it takes, and that this cost will continue. He also said that the Islamic Republic’s industrial infrastructure and defense industries have been “severely destroyed.”
The U.S. foreign minister also said that despite the rhetoric, the Islamic Republic is being badly harmed and every day sends messages through third countries to negotiate and seeks an agreement.
Rubio went on to emphasize that the main concern of the United States is the Islamic Republic’s acquisition of nuclear weapons, not regime change. He also said that Trump has said that the people of Iran deserve better leadership.
