🔻Parliament’s National Security Commission bill to prohibit sanctioned countries from passing through the Strait of Hormuz

The National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly today approved a bill under which the passage of ships from countries that sanction Iran through the Strait of Hormuz becomes “prohibited.”

Amid the continued standoff between Iran and the United States over control of the Strait of Hormuz, the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly approved Article 9 of the bill titled “Strategic Action to Ensure Security and Progress for the Strait of Hormuz.” Under this provision, countries and natural and legal persons that implement unilateral sanctions or hostile actions against the Islamic Republic of Iran do not have the right to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

Hassan Qashqavi, the spokesperson for the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, told IRNA that under this bill “any country or natural and legal persons that impose unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran or take hostile actions will be subject to a ban on passage through the Strait of Hormuz.”

Based on this resolution, the Joint Staff of the Armed Forces will be the body that determines hostile action, and the Supreme National Security Council will be the body that determines the sanctioned and asset-blocking countries or institutions.

For this bill to be implemented, it must also be approved in the parliament’s plenary session, and then be ratified by the Guardian Council and issued by the President (or the Speaker of Parliament) for implementation.
