For the first time: Israel integrates a laser weapon with the Iron Dome, an action that could change the air defense equation

The Ministry of Defense and advanced defense systems at Rafael announced for the first time the full integration of the “Iron Beam” laser system with the Iron Dome control center. The move is intended to increase air defense capabilities and reduce the cost of intercepting aerial threats.

This new system enables automated, immediate decision-making on the most suitable interception method. It uses a laser to intercept targets in favorable weather conditions, while in cases of fog, rain, or sandstorms that limit laser effectiveness, it reverts to the Iron Dome missile system.

According to this announcement, the laser power exceeds 100 kilowatts, allowing it to intercept drones, short-range missiles, and mortars within a few seconds at ranges up to 10 kilometers. In addition, each laser interception costs only a few dollars, compared with approximately $50,000 for an Iron Dome missile. The Ministry of Defense said the system has achieved a 100% success rate in recent tests.
