Qatar’s information company Kapler says that, given the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and damage to some liquefied petroleum gas units in Qatar, LNG exports from the country this year are expected to fall below 27 million tons.

Qatar has annual LPG exports of 77 million tons and last year supplied roughly one-fifth of the world’s LNG consumption.

In March, the Islamic Republic attacked two liquefaction units at Qatar’s Ras Laffan facility, and, according to estimates by the International Energy Agency, restoring these units will take three to five years. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has also severely disrupted Qatar’s LNG exports by blocking the Strait of Hormuz and attacking ships.

More than 80% of Qatar’s LNG is sent to Asian markets, and the country’s share in natural gas and LNG imports to the European Union is 4%.
