🔸 Merz: We must reach an agreement with Iran that ends the fighting in the Middle East
Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, called for reaching an agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran that would end the conflict in the Middle East.
He said such an agreement must permanently end Iran’s nuclear program and also reopen transit through the Strait of Hormuz in a stable manner.
Merz made the remarks after two days of talks with NATO leaders, including Donald Trump.
He said that despite the renewed escalation of hostilities, efforts should still be made to reach a durable agreement with Iran; an agreement that could, in the long term, lead to the silencing of weapons in the region.
The German chancellor said Trump informed them on Tuesday evening, during a dinner with NATO leaders, that he had ordered fresh attacks on Iran.
The remarks came after Trump said that the ceasefire with Iran, following the resumption of hostilities, was no longer in effect.
Friedrich Merz also said that Iran’s violation of the agreement justifies Washington’s response.
