Reuters reported that the economic crisis triggered by the war in Iran has forced thousands of Afghan migrants to return to their country. Some of those who have returned said they had been unemployed in Iran for months, and that rising prices and the decline in the value of the rial destroyed most of their savings.

Based on data from Iran’s Statistical Center, consumer prices have risen by nearly 90% compared with last year and food prices by about 130%. Reuters also said that intensified sanctions and the U.S. maritime blockade are among the factors behind the worsening of economic conditions.

Data from the International Organization for Migration shows that the average income of newly returned Afghans has fallen by nearly one-third, and only 29% of them have savings. More than two million Afghans have also left Iran in the past two years.

Returning to Afghanistan for women and girls comes with Taliban restrictions on education, employment, and movement. Setayesh, a 15-year-old girl who returned with her family from Iran, said: “If I could, I would go back; for my studies, for my friends.”
