⚡NBC News, citing four knowledgeable sources, reports that hackers linked to the Islamic Republic have, in recent weeks, also targeted communications, energy, and other infrastructure systems in addition to U.S. water systems.

According to this report, the cyberattacks have sought to target internet-connected automated systems and, so far, have been unsuccessful.

Last month, the FBI announced that it is investigating cyberattacks on municipal water systems in at least seven U.S. states. These attacks did not cause disruptions in water systems and there were no reports of water contamination.

U.S. cybersecurity officials had previously warned of malicious activities by Iranian hackers and urged operators of critical infrastructure to strengthen their security measures.
