🔹The fungi that live in our bodies may affect our health much more than we’ve imagined for years.
Among the millions of tiny living organisms that live on and inside our bodies, there are countless species of fungi. Our skin is a mosaic of fungi. The inner lining of the nose and the vagina are full of fungi, and they even live alongside the bacteria inside our gut.
While we may receive some fungi from our mother at birth, new fungi are constantly entering our bodies as well. Every time we drink beer or eat bread, we swallow yeasts, and with every breath, we inhale fungal spores suspended in the air. Many of these fungi are quickly eliminated by our immune system, but others are transient guests or lifelong acquaintances.
Scientists are investigating how the fungi that inhabit our bodies could even affect our brain and behavior.
