Hossein Iraqchi, Iran’s foreign minister, and Field Marshal Aasim Munir, commander of the Pakistan armed forces and army, discussed the latest regional developments in a phone call. The call took place while Mr. Iraqchi was in Beijing.
Pakistan has taken on a mediating role in the dispute between the United States and Iran, and in this process, Field Marshal Aasim Munir has played a central role.
While in Beijing, Hossein Iraqchi also spoke by phone with Hakan Fidan, the foreign minister of Turkey. No details have been released about these calls.
Earlier, it had been reported that during a meeting with Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister, in Beijing, Mr. Iraqchi said that Iran welcomes diplomatic solutions that guarantee people’s rights.
The Iranian foreign minister is traveling to China at a time when it is expected that President Xi Jinping will meet in Washington with Donald Trump, the U.S. president, in about a week. Beijing has not yet confirmed the visit.
Earlier, Donald Trump, during an interterm election program in North Carolina, again said that Iran wants an agreement.
