🔶 Abdulhamid: You cannot govern by imprisoning politicians and executing political detainees

Molavi Abdulhamid, the Sunni imam of Friday prayers in Zahedan and one of Iran’s prominent Sunni clerics, said on Friday, 2 Mordad (24 July), in remarks to the government: “Discrimination, lack of justice, the suppression of freedom of expression and the pen, imprisoning political activists, and executing political protesters are not an appropriate method of governance and do not help the survival of the government.”

The remarks come as, in recent days, some media outlets close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have published harsh statements against him.

In his Friday prayer sermons, Molavi Abdulhamid strongly criticized the increase in executions in Iran, adding that these punishments harm religion, cause people to become distrustful of religion, and have domestic and international consequences for the country.

The Sunni cleric stated: “Such executions are not compatible with divine and Sharia laws and lead to God’s displeasure.”

At the end of his remarks, Molavi Abdulhamid called for the suspension of executions and urged the government, instead of continuing this process, to expand justice and fairness and, by addressing people’s demands, to win their satisfaction.
