Trump calls Canada difficult as more tariffs loom

US President Donald Trump has described Canada as the “most difficult country” to deal with, while saying Ottawa is eager to reach a trade agreement.

“Canada’s leaders, not the people,” Trump said, praising the Canadian public while criticizing its government.

He warned that more tariffs were coming, including new duties on cars imported from Canada that he said would take effect on January 1.

Canada’s escalating trade dispute with the United States has increased pressure on Ottawa to develop closer economic ties with other partners.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said earlier Monday that Canada would hold talks with the European Union on what he called a “unique alliance.”

Relations between Ottawa and Washington have deteriorated since Trump returned to the White House last year, with tariffs now affecting tens of billions of dollars in cross-border trade.
