On August 20, 2026, The Guardian published an open letter titled “To the Political Prisoners of Iran, Trapped Between the Two Blades of One Scissors.” In this letter, a number of writers, academics, and activists, while referring to the situation of political prisoners in Iran, identified two factors in the intensification of pressure on them: on the one hand, repression, imprisonment, and execution by the Islamic Republic; and on the other hand, military attacks by the United States and Israel on the Islamic Republic of Iran.
