South Korea sent a delegation to assess the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, indicating the possibility of a more serious review of a military deployment requested by the United States.

Late Tuesday, South Korea’s Ministry of Defense announced: “The purpose of this delegation is to assess the political and security conditions in the region. The assessment itself does not automatically assume a military dispatch.”

Based on a report by Yonhap news agency, the delegation traveled to the United Arab Emirates last weekend and, after returning, will report its findings to South Korea’s National Security Council.

South Korea’s Ministry of Defense did not confirm the delegation’s location of deployment due to security considerations.

On Monday, the Islamic Republic warned that any military participation by South Korea in the Persian Gulf would have “serious consequences.”
