Eight diplomatic, aid, and congressional sources told Reuters that the U.S. government is considering cutting funding for the agency and withdrawing from its management structure. This prospect has sparked a behind-the-scenes campaign among diplomats and United Nations officials to preserve cooperation with Washington.

Cutting U.S. support could worsen the financial crisis of the High Commissioner’s office; an institution responsible for supporting millions of refugees and displaced people in critical areas around the world that has so far received a significant portion of its financial resources from Washington.
