António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, on Wednesday, 25 Shahrivar, at his press conference in New York, in response to a question from Maryam Rahmati, a journalist with Iran International, said that the United Nations is concerned about recent cases of human rights violations in Iran.
Guterres specifically referred to the death penalty and said: “As you know, we are firmly opposed to it.”
In her question, by referring to the fourth anniversary of the state killing of Mahsa Zhina Amini in the “Guidance Patrol” custody, Rahmati asked Guterres whether the United Nations and the international community have failed women in Iran and Afghanistan.
In response, Guterres said that depriving women of work in Afghanistan, including at United Nations workplaces, restricting girls’ access to education, and prohibiting women from working except in very specific circumstances is “absolutely intolerable.”
He said that the situation of women in Afghanistan is one of the UN’s biggest concerns and that the UN has tried to mobilize the international community, put pressure on the Taliban, and show them that the actions they are taking undermine Afghanistan’s ability to make progress, disrupt humanitarian assistance, and impose severe restrictions on the country’s development.
