The Joint Maritime Information Center said the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz, along Oman’s coast, remains open for shipping on Sunday; this comes as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claims the waterway has been closed.
Bloomberg wrote that the center described the threat level in the Strait as “severe” and asked mariners to be ready for radio contact with naval forces and to take the danger of mines seriously.
Despite the route being open, maritime traffic has been nearly halted due to the IRGC’s attacks on ships, and only two oil tankers carrying refined petroleum products were seen approaching the waterway.
Earlier, a container ship flying the flag of Cyprus was targeted near the coasts of Oman; its crew was rescued, but an Indian national went missing. The IRGC said it will not allow passage until the end of what it calls “foreign intervention.”
