Germany officially accused Russia of being behind a failed “hybrid attack” involving a drone carrying explosives on the strategic airport in the city of Leipzig in August, and announced retaliatory diplomatic measures.

🔸The German foreign minister said in a press conference on Tuesday evening, 10 Shahrivar, that in response, Germany would close the Russian consulate in Bonn, the former capital of West Germany, and would cancel the contract for “Russia House” in Berlin, a Russian cultural center, toward the end of this month, in September.

🔸Johann Waddevol added: “We are going to increase controls on the entry of Russian nationals into Germany,” and Berlin will propose that more Russians be placed on the European Union sanctions list. At the same time, the Russian ambassador to Berlin was summoned to the foreign ministry.

🔸Germany, which supports Ukraine in its war against Russia, has repeatedly reported observing suspicious drones over military and industrial sites in recent months. However, the Leipzig/Halle airport incident increased concerns, because the drone found there near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft carried explosives.

🔸This airport in eastern Germany plays an important role in transferring military goods, including for the German army and NATO allies, and it is also the base of the Ukrainian airline “Antonov.”

🔸Berlin says the attack, which occurred on 13 Mordad and disrupted flights at Leipzig Airport, was part of Russia’s long-term campaign of destabilizing operations against Europe.
