Germany today is one of the most important destinations for immigration in Europe, but the country itself has a long history of sending migrants.

Over two centuries, millions of Germans went to the United States and Russia in search of a better life. From the mid-20th century onward, the migration route changed, and millions of “guest workers,” followed by refugees and immigrants, entered Germany.
