European Union lawmakers have moved a step closer to requiring major online platforms to explain how artificial intelligence systems moderate user content. A committee in the European Parliament backed draft amendments on Friday that would force large tech companies to disclose more about the automated tools they use to flag, remove, or rank posts.
The proposal is aimed at increasing transparency around a process that shapes what millions of users see online. Supporters say clearer rules are needed so regulators, researchers, and the public can better assess how AI affects speech, moderation decisions, and possible errors or bias in platform enforcement.
The committee’s approval does not make the measure law yet. The draft is expected to go before the full European Parliament for a vote next month, where lawmakers will decide whether to advance the rules further. If adopted, the changes could add another layer of scrutiny for the largest social media and digital platforms operating in Europe.
The debate reflects broader concern in Brussels over the power of automated systems in online governance, especially as platforms rely more heavily on AI to manage large volumes of user content. Lawmakers have increasingly pressed for accountability measures that balance platform moderation with transparency and user rights.
