Reuters, three informed sources report, the United States intends to reactivate a Cold War-era military base in southern Greenland and maintain a military presence at another base on the eastern coast of the island.

These two bases are located in Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, and the move is part of an agreement that is scheduled to be signed on Tuesday between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The text of the agreement has not yet been published and its details may change until the time of signing.

The Narsarsuaq base was closed by the United States in the 1950s, while Mestersvig is now in the hands of Sirius Sled Dog Sled Patrol, from the special forces units of the Danish forces.

Denmark says the new agreement places security oversight of the Arctic within the framework of NATO. The agreement comes after months of pressure from Donald Trump to increase U.S. control over Greenland.

During the Cold War, the United States had 17 bases and more than 10,000 military personnel in Greenland, but today only the Pituffik space base remains, with around 150 U.S. forces.
