Reuters reported that Andriy Sybiha, Ukraine’s foreign minister, on Wednesday, first of Mehr, announced that in a meeting with Abbas Araqchi, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic, he discussed reciprocal steps to prevent tensions from escalating between the two countries.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, following the telephone conversation between the two ministers in July.

Sybiha wrote on the social media platform X: “Diplomacy means direct dialogue, even in difficult conditions.”

He added: “Our conversation focused on reciprocal measures to prevent further escalation of tensions between the two countries. We agreed to keep existing communication channels open.”

The Ukrainian foreign minister said the two sides also exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and Europe, and on ongoing efforts to establish peace.

Relations between Tehran and Kyiv became more tense after an attack by a Ukrainian drone on an Iranian ship in Tir month, which resulted in the death of one sailor and injuries to another. The Islamic Republic condemned the attack.

After that attack, Sybiha, in a telephone conversation, asked Araqchi to refrain from actions that would increase tensions and to end support for Russia’s war against Ukraine.
