Newly declassified documents show that over several years, including during the 2020 election period, the People’s Republic of China carried out operations that appear to be the largest interference in election data in history. The operation led to China’s illegal access to 220 million files of American voters’ information. The information includes names, addresses, phone numbers, political party preferences, and other sensitive data needed for voter registration and other illegal activities. This data breach has created an unprecedented crisis in election security. The obtained information even shows that China assigned a specialized unit specifically for exploiting data for this new project.
