The Islamic Republic of Iran’s state broadcaster, citing “some sources,” reported that “Qatar’s Al-Raqayaat oil tanker,” intended to pass through the Strait of Hormuz via the Oman route, with “the support of the U.S. Navy,” but “after ignoring repeated warnings, it was targeted by an attack.” The Islamic Republic government media added that “no senior official has yet confirmed or denied this report.” This report by the Islamic Republic government television suggests that Tehran carried out the attack. However, the Islamic Republic has not formally assumed responsibility for the attack so far. Earlier, Bloomberg reported that a liquefied natural gas–carrying vessel belonging to Qatar’s state shipping company, Nakilat, was targeted by a projectile as it exited the Strait of Hormuz and near the coast of Oman, and it caught fire. Qatar, together with Pakistan, is one of the intermediaries between Tehran and Washington, and the attack took place one day after bilateral trade between Iran and Qatar resumed following about five months of interruption.
