The UN Secretary-General wrote on X on Saturday after arriving in Damascus that this is a “solidarity trip,” and called on the international community to spare no effort in supporting the people of Syria.

Antonio Guterres added that the United Nations is standing with Syria in this “historic moment.”

Mr. Guterres is the first UN Secretary-General who, in the past 17 years—meaning since before the start of the civil war in Syria—has traveled to this country.

According to a report by Syria’s state news agency, Asaad al-Shaybani, the foreign minister, welcomed Mr. Guterres and his delegation at Damascus International Airport.

This is a three-day visit and will continue until Monday
