🔸The historic-valued “Tomanian” house known as the “Russian barracks” in Sabzevar was demolished in broad daylight on Wednesday with a bulldozer, sparking widespread protests from cultural heritage activists.
🔸Images released on social media show that on Wednesday, 18 Shahrivar, a bulldozer destroyed part of a well-known historical structure called the “Russian barracks” in Sabzevar.
🔸The “Russian barracks” or the Tomanian house in Sabzevar, although it was not registered in the list of national monuments, had been declared by Cultural Heritage as a building with definitive historic value.
🔸The architecture of this building belonged to the period of Reza Shah’s reign. During the time when Russia occupied Iran, the Russian army was stationed in this building for some time, which is why it became known as the “Russian barracks.”
🔸Majtaba Kavyan, Director-General of Cultural Heritage and head of the Sabzevar historic fabric base, said in an interview with Seday-e Miras: “This work was destroyed without coordination and without a permit from Cultural Heritage, and filing a criminal complaint against the destroyers of this historic-valued structure is definite.”
