The far-right party “Alternative for Germany” wins in the state election in Saxony-Anhalt

🔸 Friedrich Merz, chancellor of Germany, will meet on Monday with members of his Christian Democratic Party to discuss and exchange views on the party’s heavy defeat at the hands of the far-right party “Alternative for Germany” in the state election in eastern Germany.

🔸 The anti-immigration party Alternative for Germany, AfD, on Sunday, 15 Shahrivar, won 44% of the votes in the election for the state of Saxony-Anhalt, achieving its biggest victory to date. Based on initial estimates by television networks, the center-right Christian Democratic Party has received about 18% of the votes.

🔸 This electoral victory brought the AfD party, which supports Donald Trump and is close to Moscow, closer to forming its first state government. Germany’s domestic intelligence agency has officially classified it as “far-right.”

🔸 However, it appears that the party is slightly short of an outright majority, and this could set the stage for lengthy negotiations and political bargaining before a new government is formed in the state parliament in Magdeburg.

🔸 The election result across Germany sparked a wave of shock; a country that since the end of World War II had managed, to a large extent, to keep far-right parties out of power.

🔸 Daniel Günther, prime minister of the state of Schleswig-Holstein from the Christian Democratic Party, said: “For the first time since the end of World War II, the AfD party—whose state branch has been classified as far-right—has come close to winning an absolute majority. This is a shaking moment for our country.”
