The Council of the European Union announced that six individuals, including five judges of the Revolutionary Courts of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Nima Salahi, a hacker and founder of the cyber group “Ashiyane,” have been added to the sanctions list due to serious violations of human rights in Iran.

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, said in announcing the decision that these sanctions target judges who are responsible for serious human rights violations. She added that as Tehran intensifies domestic repression, the European Union will continue to hold those responsible for these actions accountable.

The Council of the European Union said the five judges issued sentences including death penalties, long-term imprisonment, flogging, fines, and additional punishments in cases related to religious minorities and political opponents. These rulings were issued, among other things, in connection with the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests after the killing of Mahsa Amini.

The European Union also sanctioned Nima Salahi for his cooperation with Iran’s FATA police and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as well as the group’s role in cyberattacks against domestic opponents and foreign institutions, and for helping to suppress the free flow of information.
