Ratko Mladić, “Butcher of Bosnia,” was laid to rest in Belgrade with formal and military honors

🔸Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, on Monday, 16 Shahrivar, witnessed a highly controversial ceremony. On this day, the funeral ceremony for Ratko Mladić, the former commander of the Bosnian Serb Army during the Balkan war, was held with state and military pageantry despite widespread international objections.

🔸Mladić, who during the Srebrenica killings commanded the operations of the siege and then the massacre of more than eight thousand Muslim Bosnian men and young boys, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague, affiliated with the United Nations, for crimes against humanity.

🔸Known as the “Butcher of Bosnia,” he died on Shahrivar 5, at the age of 84, in The Hague prison.

🔸At the official procession and burial ceremony for Mladić in Belgrade, a number of Serbian Army forces, officials of this country, and leadership cadres of the political “Autonomous Republic of Serbian Bosnia” known as “Republika Srpska” were present, and many of those attending the ceremony shouted his name as a hero simultaneously with the arrival of Mladić’s coffin.

🔸The official celebration of Ratko Mladić was held while the United States and the European Union had warned that honoring a criminal who had been convicted for crimes against humanity is unacceptable.
