Oil prices on Thursday, 19 Shahrivar, jumped by more than 6% as fighting in the region intensified and concerns grew about disruptions to energy supply, with Brent crude reaching $107.63 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate crude also crossed the $100 mark.
Based on Oilprice data, Murban oil rose by more than 5% to $122.48, and the OPEC oil basket was priced at $112.25 after increasing by more than 4%.
The price increases followed attacks on oil tankers in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, as well as the Houthis’ advance along the Red Sea coasts. Reuters reported that the seizure of the port of المخا and the Houthis’ advance toward the Hanish Islands have heightened concerns about security in the Bab al-Mandab Strait and Saudi Arabia’s oil export route.
Meanwhile, ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen sharply, and preliminary data shows that on 18 Shahrivar, only seven vessels passed through the waterway.
Brent crude had crossed $100 for the first time in six weeks on Wednesday. Disruptions to tanker traffic and insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab Strait have intensified market concerns about the supply of Middle Eastern oil.
