The hunger strike by prisoners sentenced to death in Unit 2 of Qezelhesar Prison in Karaj has entered its seventh day. A number of these prisoners, on the sixth day of the strike, in protest at their demands being left unanswered, sewed their lips and began a wet and dry hunger strike.
As reported by the Baluchistan Human Rights Documents Network, the hunger strike by prisoners sentenced to death in Unit 2 of Qezelhesar Prison, which began in protest at the intensification of the execution of death sentences, continues. In addition, some of the hunger strikers have escalated their protest methods, sewing their lips and taking up both a wet and a dry hunger strike.
On the previous day, Saturday, 27 Tir 1405, coinciding with the sixth day of the hunger strike, several prisoners, in protest at the failure of prison officials and judicial institutions to respond, sewed their lips and began a wet and dry hunger strike.
In a video received by the Baluchistan Human Rights Documents Network, one of these prisoners, while sewing his lips, says: “During the six days of hunger strike, no official so far has taken any action to investigate why the strike is happening. We are young people who are in danger of being executed due to cases related to narcotics, and they are going to kill us. That is why I sew my lips and begin a wet and dry hunger strike.” In the received video, this prisoner sews his lips in front of the camera.
Sources of the Baluchistan Human Rights Documents Network have also reported that prisoners who are transferred to the prison infirmary due to the worsening of their physical condition caused by the hunger strike are beaten by the prison security forces.
These developments are continuing, as today, Sunday, 28 Tir 1405, coinciding with the seventh day of the hunger strike, some families of prisoners sentenced to death held a protest gathering in front of Qezelhesar Prison in Karaj.
Based on previous reports by the Baluchistan Human Rights Documents Network, about 200 security and military forces, by raiding the gathering, beat the families and prevented them from continuing their protest.
This strike began on Monday, 22 Tir, in protest of the transfer of prisoners sentenced to death to solitary cells and the intensification of the execution of death sentences. After the transfer of 22 additional prisoners to the quarantine section for the execution of the sentence, it has continued as follows
So far, officials of the Prisons Organization and other responsible institutions have shown no reaction to the continuation of the prisoners’ hunger strike, the sewing of the lips of the protestors, the reports about the beating of prisoners in the infirmary, and the handling of protesting families.
