The ban on headscarves for girls under 14 in Austria faced its first test on Monday, as schools reopened in Vienna and several other states.

Based on a Reuters report, the country’s main Muslim organization and other groups call the law discriminatory, and there could be a legal challenge.

Austria’s governing coalition, made up of three centrist parties, proposed the ban and argued that it protects girls’ freedom.

The law, which was passed in parliament last month of Azar (November/December) with support from the far-right party, bans “traditional Muslim” coverings such as the hijab and burqa in all public and private schools.
