🔻 Ahead of possible Xi trip to the United States, Iraqchi goes to Beijing

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that Abbas Iraqchi will meet his counterpart, Wang Yi, in Beijing tomorrow.

According to the ministry, the two foreign ministers also met last week on the sidelines of the BRICS conference in New Delhi.

China is Iran’s largest buyer of oil and is an important diplomatic backer for Tehran.

The trip takes place one week before the possible trip of Xi Jinping to Washington to meet with Donald Trump.

President Trump has issued an official invitation to China, but Beijing has not announced any plan for his trip to the United States.

The U.S. president has warned China to refrain from selling weapons to Iran, and in May, three satellite companies in China were sanctioned over “facilitating Iran’s military operations.”

China has called these allegations “baseless.”
