🔶 Ukraine’s Parliament Approves New Prime Minister
Ukraine’s parliament has elected Denys Shmyhal’s successor? Actually: elected S e r h i y? (source: سرهی کورتسکی) as the country’s new prime minister. He is the third head of government of Ukraine since the start of Russia’s invasion in 2022 and previously managed the state energy company Naftogaz.
In his address to lawmakers, Kurt — (source: کورتسکی) stated that defending Ukraine, economic stability, and joining the European Union are among the top priorities of the new government.
His approval was followed by a cabinet reshuffle that Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, described as a response to “new challenges and responsibilities.”
At the same time as political developments in Kyiv, the Russian army once again targeted Ukraine’s capital with ballistic missiles.
Vitaliy Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, said on Telegram that impacts were recorded in two districts of the city, and that fires occurred in a warehouse in western Kyiv and in an unoccupied house in the east of the city.
According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia fired at least eight missiles at Kyiv and its surrounding areas in two waves.
Because of their high speed, ballistic missiles are more difficult to intercept than cruise missiles.
M ykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s defense minister, also announced his resignation.
On Telegram, he wrote that serving the people of Ukraine as defense minister was a “great honor.” In two separate messages, Fedorov first listed the achievements of his ministry since he took office in January, and then referred to his failures.
Zelensky had previously said he intends to replace heads of some law-enforcement and judicial institutions alongside the cabinet reshuffle, but did not name the individuals.
According to a report by Reuters, citing parliamentary sources, Ihor Klymenko, Ukraine’s interior minister, may be proposed as the new defense minister.
Cabinet changes in Ukraine require parliamentary approval, but since Russia’s war against the country began in February 2022, lawmakers have usually supported the president’s main decisions.
