The U.S. consulate in Peshawar, Pakistan, was officially closed as of yesterday.
The consulate announced on its X account that, starting from Friday, responsibility for diplomatic activities related to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province will henceforth be handled by the “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Unit” at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad.
In May, the U.S. State Department decided to gradually close this consulate and said it was due to its commitment to the security of diplomatic personnel and to the efficient management of resources.
Peshawar is the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province and the closest U.S. diplomatic representation to the Afghanistan border. This consulate had previously served as the main hub for U.S. operations and support during, throughout, and after the 2001 attack on Afghanistan.
The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad and the consulates in Karachi and Lahore continue their activities.
