Choo Hyon, South Korea’s foreign minister, will travel to Washington on Thursday and will discuss with Marco Rubio, the U.S. secretary of state, the possible dispatch of this country’s forces to the Strait of Hormuz.

According to statements by South Korean officials, trade is also among the topics of the talks. Choo will be in Washington from Thursday to Saturday, and his meeting with Rubio will take place on Friday.

In August, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he would reduce military exercises with South Korea because the country has refused to join U.S. military efforts in Iran.

The visit is taking place during days when South Korea has sent a delegation to the region to assess the security situation and the Islamic Republic has warned that any military involvement by Seoul in the Persian Gulf would have “serious consequences.”

South Korea also condemned on Tuesday the Houthi attack on civilian and economic facilities in southern Saudi Arabia, and urged the group to stop its attacks immediately.
