U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, on Thursday on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Manila.
Russia’s TASS news agency reported that the meeting lasted more than half an hour and that Lavrov and Rubio were to discuss issues related to resolving the war in Ukraine.
The meeting also took place alongside the U.S. military operation against the Islamic Republic.
CNN wrote that neither of the two officials responded to reporters’ questions about whether Russia supports Iran by helping to target American forces, or whether Moscow intends to stop its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Also, according to a report from the U.S. State Department, Rubio and Lavrov discussed “U.S.-Russia relations and the need to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.”
On Wednesday, Rubio, in a meeting with Lavrov, said about the possible proposal of Ukraine: “Obviously the war in Ukraine has, in many respects, prevented Russia and the United States from finding areas for agreement on other issues.”
