🔻In a reciprocal move, Iran gave the Swedish diplomat 48 hours to leave its soil

Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, condemned the expulsion of one of its diplomats from Sweden. Iran says that it has informed the Swedish ambassador that one of its diplomats in Tehran must leave that country within 48 hours.

Earlier, Sweden’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it had summoned Iran’s ambassador and requested one of the officials at the Iranian embassy in Stockholm to leave Sweden.

The ministry said it carried out this decision due to activity “incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations,” but did not provide further details about the nature of this activity.

The Vienna Convention sets rules and privileges related to diplomatic missions.

Now, in its statement, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called Sweden’s action “the result of Israel’s interference” and described its “interference in this country’s security affairs” as an “unfounded accusation.”

Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also called Sweden’s policies toward Iran “destructive” and accused the country of “vile remarks about Iran” and “hosting elements and anti-Iranian terrorist groups.”

The ministry said it carried out this decision due to activity “incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations,” but did not provide further details about the nature of this activity.

The arrest of Hamid Nouri in Stockholm—who was accused of involvement in the killing of political prisoners in 1988—led to tensions between the two countries.

Later, Sweden strongly protested the detention of its citizens in Iran.
